The Training Course
Advanced digital skills are becoming a prerequisite for entry into many jobs and have a wide range of applications, even beyond domains where they are needed for core tasks. Across competence dimensions, the largest skills deficit, both among the active labour force and the population at large, relates to the use of software for content manipulation. Almost
one in three internet users in the EU has no skills in this area (i.e. they claimed not to have carried out any of the activities considered under this dimension, which range from relatively basic text treatment and spreadsheet-based work to video
editing and coding). This share is particularly large in Bulgaria and Romania (about 51 % of internet users) as well as Latvia (40%).

Digital skills are critically important not only for accessing the labour market but also for harnessing the benefits of the digital transformation that is currently underway. Making sure the EU labour force has the necessary digital skills, including by addressing digital skills deficits in certain groups, such as youth and those who work with them, will thus be essential to bring about an inclusive digital economy and society.
The fast changing digital environment requires a proper response from our educational systems if we are to educate the European citizens of the future. ‘SMART’ youth work recognizes that digital media & technologies open great potential for youth empowerment, enriching opportunities for enhancing their personal capabilities & competences & providing opportunities for connectivity & interaction with others.
The main idea of this project is to introduce a specifically designed NFE (Non formal Educational) training that combines digital tools such as web platforms, computer software and mobile application in order to enrich the digital competences of youth workers. More specifically, the youth workers involved in the main activity will be equipped to obtain, process and
create digital content through graphic design, web and application software development. This will enable them, not only to modernize their teaching through the use of digital learning resources, but even more so to share this practical knowledge with the young people they are working with.
The project benefits to all three dimensions for impacting successful digital youth work, according to the European Union Work Plan for Youth for 2016-2018: digitalisation of society, organisational digital development and youth work competences.
The specific objectives of the project, in line with Erasmus+ programme objectives, are:
– To boost both youth workers’ soft skills and ICT skills by engaging them in digital activities through the use of digital content and digital tools in the digital environment.
– To support youth workers motivation and capacity to use digital tools and technologies to create knowledge and to innovate processes in creation and implementation of smart youth work
– To support the inclusion of youth workers and young people into the labour market by providing them with advanced digital skills and competences that will significantly boost their employability
– To promote the understanding and the application of certain EU youth policies related to the domain of this project such as ‘The Digital Competence Framework’ and ‘European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators’
– To strengthen the international cooperation of the consortium for the modernization of youth through the development new initiatives that develop the digital skills of young people.

The Training Course
For almost a decade, the maker movement has been making its own may into non-formal education. Educators and researchers have been talking about the role of making activities in learning; they highlight the potential for project-based and hands-on approach to boost youth interest for inquiry and learning, to re-activate them from a social, psychological, professional point of view. One popular strand of making activities in the context of non formal education involve experimenting with computer programming, electronics, and robotics.

Typically, girls are much less prone to participate in such initiatives than boys, mainly due to the negative stereotypes they nurture towards scientific and technical disciplines. Thus, the great promise of the maker movement to democratize access to making as well as to its progressive spirit and philosophy are to be reconsidered in the face of evidence. If we believe that making activities and maker identities are crucial for empowerment, then it is our job to set up situations whereby all learners have the opportunity and will to engage.

E-textiles promises to be the trojan horse that will enable girls to fully benefit from making activities and the maker movement. By combining fashion with electronic and computer programming, e-textiles offer female youth expanded access to materials and tools, resulting in opportunities to take on project leadership roles in highly technical areas.

Project Objectives
● Innovate youth work by introducing new practices based on the combination of crafting textiles with computer programming and electronics
● Exchange on tinkering as an emerging pedagogical approach, especially crafting e-textiles as a way to boost female participation in non formal educational activities
● Sensitize youth workers to initiatives around electronic DIY and digital culture Participants will partake in a five days training on e-textiles, in view of jump-starting this practice in their own professional settings. The training will take place in Cyprus.

The main activities of the course will be:
– Introduction to electronic DIY for youth work purposes, via the Arduino open-source prototypingboard
– Introduction to e-textiles
– Production of e-textiles projects, working in groups
– Debate on how to assess making activities and monitor learning outcomes. Up-to-date tools and methods conceived specifically to serve this purpose will be presented and experimented.
– Meet with the local maker community (Youth Maker space Larnaca)
– Learn about constructivist teaching methods (teaching methods based on hands on, immersive, participative approach, project based learning)
– Explore initiatives aiming to support the integration of the maker attitude in the field of education run at international scale
– Practice maker education in a makerspace/fablab setting
– Discuss extra thoughts on building girl-inclusive maker workshops.

It is generally assumed that young people these days are versed in digital knowledge and can successfully transfer such into social capital in their respective local communities in EU.
‘Digital native’ is a term increasingly used in public discourse to describe the generations of young people who grow up surrounded by digital technologies.

The term suggests that young people intuitively know how to use technology for business and profit and hence have no need for digital education or training. ‘’DEP’’ Digital Entrepreneurship Project: Empowering Disadvantaged Young people with Resourceful Digital Skills’’ outline the issues connected with this assumption and provides evidence to demonstrate that it is a dangerous fallacy, that needed to be addressed and solutions going forward preferred.

Disadvantaged young people do not inherently possess the skills for safe and effective use of technologies for business, social capital creation, creativity, initiatives leading self employment or employability, and skills acquired informally are likely to be incomplete.

The failure to provide youths with a complete set of skills in a formal manner leads to a new digital divide between digital lifestyle skills and digital business and workplace skills.
The lack of proficiency in the tools needed for today’s workforce contributes to an increasingly lost generation, who are unable to realise their full potential as learners, employees, self employers, entrepreneurs or citizens using digital technologies.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Functionally, a strategic partnership of disadvantaged young people of like minds on visualizing structural misalignment in ICT and digital knowledge in participating countries decided to map out an action plan to address the issue of inadequate levels of ICT/digital skills, especially at the international levels involving trainers, youth workers etc. who are agents of change and learning.

This was realized in one of the project sessions with participating countries with a single purpose of revolutionizing the ICT/digital competencies among disadvantaged young people through ICT/digital empowerment training courses to sustain and widen networks of participants; thereby boosting skills and employability drives; modernizing education, training and youth work in line with European Commission’s key priority.

‘DEP’ Digital Entrepreneurship Project: Empowering Disadvantaged Young people with Resourceful Digital Skills’’ in line with EU thematic priorities; of ICT skills acquisition by disadvantaged young people, improvement, participation of disadvantaged learners, cultural diversity and inclusivity of people with fewer opportunities; coupled with annual priorities of inclusive growth, fight against marginalization of people of fewer opportunities encouraging them to participate effectively in the project life cycle aims to:

PROJECT AIM:
Encourage disadvantaged young people, youth trainers, youth workers, project multipliers and youth representatives to connect, learn how to deliver empowerment and employability skills training using ICT/digital, social networking media processes etc.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To give participants the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the European and neighbouring countries dimension on ICT skills and employability problems
To enhance participant’s knowledge of other European and neighbouring countries’ education systems and their provision of ICT and employability skills training and learning process
To improve specific skills required to teach ICT skills to young people, youth trainers, youth workers, project multipliers and youth representatives
To encourage inter-cultural learning, ICT and employability skills acquisition through cultural mobility, encourage innovation, creativity through new learning and education using Information Technology.

PROJECT METHODOLOGY
Methods: Non formal training process involve use of role plays, exercises, games; active learning methods, educational tools, outdoor activities, group building activities, simulations, and info sessions to engage participants.
